In the past year, the community of Tsigeba has almost halved the number of out-of-school children, down to 54. The dropout rate is just 0.47% – far below the 20% average in the districts we work in – and 95% of students attend school nearly every day.

In a country where education is often not valued, the parents of Tsigeba are taking a stand and sending their children to school.

Unfortunately, the school they send them to is far from conducive for a proper education. All seven classrooms are in a state of serious disrepair. Broken corrugated iron sheet roofs don’t stop the rain, turning the dirt floor into mud pits. When sun comes out, so does the dust, flying through wide gaps in the walls made of sticks.

There is no playground and no library. Only 50% of children have a desk. Just 20% can read at the national standard.

At imagine1day, we are driven by the need for education in Ethiopia. But we are also inspired by the actions of those in Ethiopia, battling against hardship to educate their young. We see an opportunity to support the incredible commitment made by the Tsigeba community and work with them to deliver a new, proper school, with improved facilities.
